Restoration - On to the Inside
Now that the exterior was looking great, it was time to focus on the interior. First I installed a new set of window felts on the doors as well as a new set of Soff-Seal Weatherstripping on the doors and trunk to keep any rain out.
As you can see, the dash wires and gauges were a mess, so my next task was to decide just how I wanted to restore them.
The original 1966 Chevelle came with one big sweeping speedometer, but a driver who wants to be in-tune with their car needs more info, like a tachometer for engine RPMs and temperature gauges at least.
These are fairly easy to add however deciding where to mount them is often a challenge. You need them to be visible while driving, but you don't want them to be placed clumsily or interfere with the beauty of the classic car's interior arrangement. Many rebuilders hang them below the dash angled upward, known as the "knee knocker tach", or directly on the center console, or even on the steering column. Some even mount them on the hood, outside of the car altogether, but I didn't really like any of these locations.
I know I needed a tach but was hesitant to start bolting brackets onto my dash, so I opted for a whole new dash arrangement from Covans Classic. They offer very nice looking new dash inserts with spots for six gauges, plenty of room for what I needed and a more modern look.
